I've been a satisfied subscriber to eMusic.com since 2005 after years of CD music clubs (i.e. BMG, YourMusic, Sony) membership.

EMusic has monthly subscriptions starting at $9.99 for 30 downloads.

Bought a few songs off iTunes. Probably largest selection of any provider. They use mp4 that a lot of portable players can't play and all downloads are $.99.

Recently started using http://www.soundsbox.com where a $20 prepay is required but downloads are only $0.14 a song.

What are other board users experience?

I get my fix at HypeMachine (http://www.hypem.com). It's a site that "crawls" different music blogs and lets users listen to the music. The blogs feature free, legal indie music but mostly for a limited period of time only. Updates everyday. Really great site for checking out indie music, old and new.
