I am trying to learn guitar, and I was wondering if anyone knew what kind of electric guitar a beginner such as myself should get.

While I don't play the guitar so I should not be considered good advice ... I can say this.

Your best bet would be to look at craigslist and find a good used gipson or fender strat and buy it for a few hundred bucks. Thats about the price you will pay for a brand new "beginner" guitar and you'll wind up with a much better guitar for the same price. I still feel used instruments are the best bet for someone beginning because its a great way to get into it without spending a whole lot of money.

Not to mention the real pros like their stuff vintage anyways :P

Exactly. If I were you, go fender. They are a solid brand and their low end guitars work great. Pickups and wiring all seem to stay intact. I'm still playing on mine and it's been five years. I'm improved but never felt the need to get a new electric because my my stratocaster works great.
Now i'm going to show my own bias here and recommend you get an acoustic just because an acoustic guitar tends to be more flexible in every way. With an electric, you are messing around with cords, electricity and an amp. An acoustic holds its own and personally, i'm an acoustic guitarist so i can't imagine ever being without one. And hey! I don't have to be because I can carry my acoustic with me everywhere. =] Electric is simply something i pick up to mess around with nowadays. To each his own though. Any guitar is better than no guitar, aye?
You can also get acoustic guitars with pickups. Word.

You might also look at clearance sales at something like Guitar Center or Sam Ash. But remember, new or used, don't buy it if it doesn't feel right. No instrument will be useful to you if it ends up sitting on a shelf.

It's just practice man. Self-teach and put in the time and you will be where you want to be. A little self-discipline goes a long way.
I'm completely self-taught on guitar, drums, and harmonica or years. Practice every day, wouldn't have it any other way.

I agree, you'll find out you hear the sounds clearer too at your own pace. I also have a guitar(Acoustic) and sometimes I go back to it, and mess around with it. I cannot play properly but, I like to strum a few chords. I was learning to play a few months back, but I stopped. I know I can always pick it up again, and really put my time and effort into learning to play again. It is just matter of whether I really want to do it. I'm happy it's here in this room facing me, as I absolutetly love looking at it, as it reminds me to pick it up and play sometimes. lol :) I also have my keyboard and recorder from primary school lol
