The MGMT has released their new CD Oracular Spectacular, their first release under Columbia Records

Track Listing:

1. Time to Pretend
2. Weekend Wars
3. The Youth
4. Electric Feel
5. Kids
6. 4th Dimensional Transition
7. Pieces of What
8. Of Moons, Birds & Monsters
9. The Handshake
10. Future Reflections

While Oracular Spectacular contains some previously released tracks (Kids and Time to Pretend) the cd itself is a deep departure from the previous release and shows a new direction for their band. Started in 2001 by college friends as a joke, the MGMT has quickly become a sleeper success. They are known for their synthesizer use and tendency's to throw in 80's new-wave sounds when deemed necessary.

The album kicks off with a old favorite that gained them the attention of Columbia Records to begin with. Poppy with a lot of distortion the song is worth a listen and still one of my favorites. Some compare it to synthesizer-era flaming lips with tendancy's into 80's new-wave. The next track Weekend Wars is already a favorite of mine after only two listens! Weekend warriors reminds me slightly of Pink Floyd and has a nice guitar riff and then slips into something more modern. The Youth is much more Bob Dylan if he ever learned anything about synthesizers a little repetitive at times the organ and violin background provides a nice relief. Electric feel seems to be disco throwback. Not a bad song overall but not a favorite on the album.

Kids was already a success on their first release and is overall my favorite song by them. Catchy and very poppy a little hard to describe unless you hear it for yourself. 4th dimension is a little more spacey and strange. A very interesting song ; it some how reminds me of the more far out doors songs. Pieces of what is a accoustic song with a lot of reverb in the voice. The song is ok but definetly not one of the stronger tracks on the CD. Of moons is a another interesting track. Very spacey and slips into nice musical riffs between lyrics - worth a listen. The handshake is another strange song (as if they are not all at this point?) that is worth a listen. However it is not one of the stronger tracks on the album. The CD ends with Future Reflections - and opens with sythn trumpets. A good track with heavy voice over a light organ background.

Overall Oracular Spectacular is a great album worth checking into. As I stated earlier this is the first major release by a new band and shows the polished post-production provided by Columbia. If you can't buy the album go see them live! You won't regret it!

I heard "Time to Pretend" on internet radio and was egar to find more by the artist. That led to the discovery of "Electric Feel" and "Kids" which are destined to be indie hits. My search also led to the music by Of Montreal.
