Unless you've been stranded on some remote island these past few weeks then you've probably become aware of the hoopla around the new Radiohead release In Rainbows. The album was released sans label and allowed Radiohead to set the price for the release. The price: whatever you wanted. Well I was hooked at hello and slapped down 1£ (Like $100 US) for a chance to take part in this phenomenon.

For a quick refresher the track listing is as follows:

01 15 Step
02 Bodysnatchers
03 Nude
04 Weird Fishes/Arpeggi
05 All I Need
06 Faust Arp
07 Reckoner
08 House of Cards
09 Jigsaw Falling into Place
10 Videotape

The CD itself I would peg at somewhere between a cross of OK Computer and Kid A , which in my opinion is their best stuff. Some of it is a little to whiney for my taste (we'll get into that later) but overall a fucking great listen. The album starts of strong with 15 step and I would argue this is a top favorite of mine on this CD so far. The underlying guitar melody is just perfectly matched with his voice. It's pegged at 5 stars in my itunes collection. Bodysnatchers is a interesting shift from 15 with very heavy guitar distortion; not a favorite but definitely not a bad track. I do enjoy how as the song gets faster towards the end. I would say if you don't like the ending, wait for the end; pegged at 3 stars in iTunes. Nude is a dynamic switch from Body. Much slower and the more classic "whine" of Radiohead. The guitar returns but in a lighter fashion; pegged at 4 stars in iTunes.

Weird Fishes/Arpeggi is another favorite of mine on the album. A great melody and a wonderful beat but a interesting twist to the depressing lyrics; 5 stars in my iTunes. All I need is very electric in nature and not a favorite of mine. The music is darker in nature then Weird Fishes but ironically the lyrics are lighter in nature; 3 stars. Faust Arp for some reason reminds me of something hem and sting would produce. Its again light musically with a nice violin undertone and a great track; I've got it listed at 4 stars in my book. Reckoner breaks the mold again and has become a favorite track. The wonderful guitar returns but this time with a piano accompaniment. It reminds me of a Kid A/ Ok Computer cross and I have it listed at 5 stars in my iTunes.

House of Cards returns with the electric distortion but this time much lighter and manageable and introduces some interesting background/ hall echo effects. The vocals are great, music is great and the lyrics are interesting. I have it listed at 4 stars. Jigsaw has the return of the acoustic guitar but this time in a nice fast manner. Drums are introduced, the track slowly gains speed and, when the lyrics kick in, the track really kicks into overdrive; 4 stars in my book. Last but not least is the track Videotape. A full piano introduction this track is much slower then the rest. It's almost purely piano and vocals until about midway in they introduce some other effects which sound like a sort of strange spawn of a marching band drum that slowly fades out as the track progresses. After words what sounds like hammering? kicks in; 3 stars in my book.

In Rainbows is a wonderful addition to the already great Radiohead collection. This IS a must have for any fan of the series and because of uniqueness of the distribution I would recommend you get it strait from the sources mouth.
